Don’t eat the Pad Thai
March 10th, 2002 at 12:00am
Well the warm welcome to Thailand was rather short-lived…yeah, I got food poisoning last night. I guess it was bound to happen eventually, I mean I’ve been in SE Asia for almost 5 months without any problems. Still, as a vegetarian especially it’s not something that I usually worry about.
Today I was meant to start cycling to Bangkok or take a boat to Ko Mak or Ko Wai for a few days on the beach. Instead I layed in bed all day and went back and forth to the bathroom when I could muster the strength. It was awful! When I woke up this morning, I felt so sick that I thought I was going to die. Not only was I running to the bathroom but I was also vomitting along the way into a trash can because I couldn’t even hold it to get to the bathroom. And of all times when you want an air-con room and your own private bathroom, I’m staying in a guesthouse with small stuffy hot rooms just big enough to fit a bed and I am sharing a bathroom with other guests. I would have paid almost anything to move to a nice hotel and get a good (cool) room to suffer in, but I barely had the strength to lift my head yet alone pack my bags and walk down the street. I couldn’t even hold any water down – every time I tried to drink a sip or two I would immediately vomit it up and it was torture because I was so thirsty. What a miserable day.
It’s 4pm now and I’m starting to feel a LITTLE better (ie, I can sit up) and I haven’t vomitted since before noon so I hope that I am nearing the end of this nightmare. What I’ll do now I have no idea because I feel so weak that cycling to Bangkok is not an option for at least a few days when I can attempt to start eating again. Why exactly do I love travelling again? I have no friggin’ idea! I need a vacation.
