Snakes for everyone!

September 8th, 2002 at 12:00am

By the fire again, sitting with friends, relaxing after another really good day. Went diving once yesterday and twice today – although the water was cold (17-18 deg C or 62-64 deg F), the sea was really calm and the diving was good. Dives were 24m, 21m, and 14m, all around the vicinity of Julian Rocks. We saw turtles, wobbegongs, king fish, grouper, cod fish, lion fish, moray eels, nudibranches, sweetlips, and stingrays just to name of few. The one day we saw whales in the water on the way to the dive site and the next day we saw dolphins – that was just amazing. The Sundive people are really friendly and have great safety standards – a much nicer setup than the shops in Cairns.

Yesterday afternoon I walked to the lighthouse for sunset with Steph (Germany) and Ek (New Zealand). We had beautiful views of the bay and the sea and even the most easterly point of Australia which was just below. This evening I went for a walk by myself at sunset and enjoyed the cool temperature, the pink glow of the beach, and the solitude. I could easily stay here a few more days, and will try to change my ticket tomorrow but chances are slim because the flights are apparently booked. If I stay I’d love to do some sea kayaking and try a session in a sensory deprivation tank. If I go I’ll be heading to Bangkok with a 2-week stopover in Borneo on the way back. Either way is actually good, so I’ll just see where I’m meant to be.

Share House quote of the day:

‘Snakes are now available to everyone’, by Noam, our Israeli bartender, meaning to say’Snacks’ instead of’Snakes’ in his broken English.

Australia has been really good to me.
