Coins not part of Vietnamese Diet

January 12th, 2004 at 12:00am

“Coins don’t taste very nice but Vietnamese children are learning the hard way.

Over the past week, seven children aged between two and six have been sent to hospital after swallowing newly minted coins put into circulation last month after an 18-year absence.

Doctors in the central province of Quang Nam had to operate on three of them to remove the offending objects. The others were able to pass them out of their systems naturally.

‘We suggest that parents should be careful to avoid such kinds of accidents and they should not let the children play with coins,’ said a spokeswoman for the Duy Xuyen district health centre.’”
