A difficult border run to Malaysia

January 16th, 2004 at 12:00am

I am back on Ko Samui after a tough border run to Malaysia and back. It was tough because I got food poisoning from something I ate at the Spa the night before and also because the 4.5-hour minivan ride to the border was a complete blur at nearly 160 km/hr (100 mi/hr). It felt like death.

I struggled to get to the border, got a new stamp, and knew there was no way I was doing the return trip back to Ko Samui on the same day. (I threw up about 6-7 times on the Thai side of the border.)

I had the minivan drop me off at the crossroads to Hat Yai, which is the nearest town of any consequence to the border. I barely had enough energy to get a hotel room, and once in the room I promptly vomited all the water I had drank since the border purge. Oh the misery! But how relieved I was to be in an air-con room with Sky television and NOT to be in the death-ride minibus!

I stayed in bed all afternoon. This morning at 8am I took another minivan back to Ko Samui, and arrived home at 3:30pm. I had a shower, and am now trying some solid food for the first time. I hope it goes well. Just my luck to get sick on the day of a border run!! Think I handled it pretty well considering, but don’t want to ever have to do it again. I can happily cross that off the’have dones’ on the traveling list!

TRANSCRIBER’S NOTE: Hi fan. (Note the singular, because I know there could not possible be more than one person following my ‘adventures’!) I’ve been a busy bee today uploading the photos from all of my journal entries since October 2003. They are now on the site for you to enjoy. Just go up to the ‘Journal’ button at the top of the screen, and scroll back to 10.19.03 to start your viewing session with some excellent historically correct depictions of George W. Bush. All new photos are on the site from 10.24.03 to the current journal entry of 01.16.04. Thanks for your patience!
