Post-Coup Life in Thailand
October 9th, 2006 at 12:00am
So yeah, it’s been about 2.5 weeks since the coup happened here; as far as I
know there is still no government running the country, and the only real
noticeable effect from it all is the lack of tourists around! I think a lot of
people must have canceled their travel plans because I’ve never seen it so
deserted on Koh Samui. I’ve been the only person staying in my bungalows
for the last few nights now, and I actually ALMOST started to miss those awful
Italian boys with all the prostitutes! I know, I realized real quick that the
silence here is a gift, so I am enjoying not hearing anything but the sound of
the waves from my bungalow!
Since the overthrow of Thailand’s Prime Minister, I have been to Kuala
Lumpur and Bangkok for a combined visa-run and break from the island.
After 3 months on the same little beach, it was good to enjoy the sites and
sounds of 2 big cities. I had a one-week city to city invasion, and at the end I
was definitely ready to get back to my quiet little life!
So I’m getting back into my routine here which consists of daily walks on the
beach, meditation, massage, reading in my hammock, socializing with
friends, watching pirated DVD movies before they even come out in the
cinema and eating lots of good, fresh, healthy food. It’s not a bad way to
escape from the hectic daily grind of the ‘real world!’
Everyone keeps asking me how much longer I’m planning to stay. As usual, I
have no idea. I am happy to be here for as long as I’m happy here, and then
it will be time to go. Unless the bank account goes bust before that, and then
it?s definitely time to go!
I hope to start learning Reiki Level 2 this week, and I’ve also been doing a bit
of Chinese Cupping as well so that will keep me busy. All in all I’d say this is
a good place to be in the world at the moment!
Here is a nice little quote that I got from one of the local monasteries (author
unknown):
When you clean your body,
Don’t forget to clean your mind.
When you feed your body,
Don’t forget to feed your mind.
When you study about the world,
Don’t forget to study your mind.
In every endeavor that you undertake,
Be mindful, and know yourself.
