Passing thru the Gold Coast again

Back on the Gold Coast, doing my laundry at the laundromat, and it’s another sunny, beautiful day in Australia. I had a great cycle out of Mt. Warning yesterday, riding down from the mountains to the coast, with fantastic scenery and good roads the whole way. The kind of day that makes you excited to be cycling. I left the campsite at 8am after saying goodbye to the folks with the Gold Coast Campervan Club. Such nice people – before I left half of them invited me to cycle to their next destination and spend the Easter holiday camping with them, and the other half offered to let me stay with them on the Gold Coast on my way north. I would have said yes to that for sure if I wasn’t already planning to stay with Alan.

So I arrived at Alan’s place just around lunchtime and basically spent the afternoon and evening relaxing. And yes, those cold beers tasted GREAT after a good day of riding.

Today I’ve got to do my laundry and then separate out half my clothes to send home since I’ve definitely got way too much to be carrying around on a bicycle. Alan is about to start a big project of laying new tiles on his porch and I’ll probably spend the rest of the day helping him with that. And maybe tomorrow as well, depending on how far we get.

And then, after that, I head north, destination Cairns, about 1700 km north of here. I’ve decided to take the train just to get north of Brisbane so I don’t have to deal with cycling through a big city, and so officially I guess I’ll begin my trip when I step off the train. I’m looking forward to it. Ever since I left Byron I’ve been having a great time and meeting cool people and I know there will be more of it to come.

Ok, washing is done now, time to go…next journal entry should be from somewhere on the road!

Yesterday:
Distance: 49 km
Time: 3 hours 25 minutes

The Gold Coast

Wow. It’s been a long time since I’ve written in the journal, over 3 weeks I think. The time has absolutely flown by since I’ve been in Australia. And with my family being here and then the website being down for almost 2 weeks, well I just didn’t have a chance to keep up. But I’m back now, yeah, time to document again.

I left Sydney last Sunday and I’ve been on the Gold Coast ever since. I’m staying with a friend who I met while in Sapa, Vietnam back in January. His name is Alan, he’s 74 years old, and he’s been volunteering the majority of his time helping the H’mong people in Vietnam for the last 6 years. With him having spent so much time there and me having been completely Asia-ed out when I arrived here, we have a lot in common and much to talk about.

It’s been a great break from travelling to be able to stay in a house with my own room and bed and real sheets and blankets.

We haven’t done very much at all this week actually besides walk on the beach and sit around talking and watch tv in the evening and I’ve been completely content with that. It’s only a 10-minute walk to the beach from Alan’s house and a 20-minute drive up to Surfer’s Paradise so it’s a perfect location. I was really fortunate that he invited me to stay anytime.

I can’t believe that I’ve been in Australia for 4 weeks now that I think about it. The time has really flown by, I know I’ve already said it, but it has. For now I’ve got a flight back to Bangkok on September 10th, but I already feel like I want to stay longer. I guess I’ll decide about it once I leave Alan’s place and am back in the backpacker world again. I plan on heading out either tomorrow or the next day.
