Hey there.
Instead of working today I read almost your entire series of journal entries about hiking the AT. I must say you are truly an inspiration. I’ve been wanting to hike the trail. I just need the right time to do it, and I need to make sure I’m in good enough shape! Most likely I would hike alone like you did, and see it as an opportunity to find myself and experience nature in the best possible way. Just wanted to give you some props! Are there things that make hiking the trail more complicated for a woman? How old were you when you hiked the AT, and how do you manage leaving work for 6 months and then trying to get a job when you’re done?
I really enjoyed your site!

Thanks for the account of your Kilimanjaro ascent. Yours was one of the web diaries I read avidly before embarking on my own trip up the Marangu route. I reached Uhuru nearly two weeks ago and although I didn’t suffer from nausea or headaches I got a stomach upset at Kibo hut. Nasty! Based on your account I took some ginger tea with me – I’d never tried the stuff before – and it worked! I still got totally exhausted just before Gillman’s Point but the ginger tea settled things down sufficiently for me to make it that far and sunrise plus the sight of the top kept me going the rest of the way.
Why not compile all your adventures into book form?

Jennifer:
You most definitely do not remember me but I certainly have enjoyed following your worldly travels on your site. I climbed Mt. Rainier in Washington State with you in September 2001. I was the guy roped up directly behind you on the climb to the summit.
The pictures and your descriptions of the various places you have traveled are wonderful. I read the updates with my young sons. Hopefully it will inspire them to one day follow in your footsteps. I know it is difficult to keep up the journal when you are living your life but please know we really appreciate hearing of your adventures. Good luck in your future travels.

Thank you for the AT journal experience!
Yes, I read your journal for every step of the way
while doing the AT. It has helped prepare me for what
to generally expect for my experience as I try to do
it by sections from Springer.
Got my calendar marked for late this month, and hope
to get at least a week off to hopefully make it to the
Smoky Mountain National Park border. Still don’t know
what my trail name will be.
Thanks for sharing your journal and experience!
Hope your Australia experience will be a meaningful
one.

…very much for your journal, especially the meditation & cleansing
sections…reading these, and seeing your reference to cleanse.net has
come at *just* the right time for me: i just hope that i can muster the
discipline to return to the healthy ‘path’.

Jennifer-
I discovered your site when searching for info in preparation for a trip to New Zealand a year or so ago.
I ended up reading through much of it, and I gotta say, I am looking forward to you getting back on the
road again. Kinda like a new season of a show you have only seen in re-runs or something.
Anyways, although it sounds cheesy, your adventures have really inspired me to at least get my head
somewhat out of this money/career/possessions chase and get back out there.
Just figured I’d tell you that. : )
Thanks,
Andrew

Dear Jen
Hi my I’m currently living in Scotland with a plan to move to Golden Bay in August this year. I decided to have a wee look at goings on in the area and came across your website.
I have only read a little, its distracting me from my work (I’m a self employed architect working from home desperately trying to get some drawings done for a client) anyway Ive got to say your journal is a brilliant read and has met its objective in inspiring others.
I will probably have a trip planned in the next week or so to give me some exploration to look forward to when I get there.
Anyway I wish you the very best and thank you for publishing your journal its a real treat.

Hi Jennifer,
I just finished reading your entire AT 2000 journal. I found it through Google. I enjoyed the read as I am planning my adventure for 2008. I’m presently 44 years old and want to do the AT before I turn 50. After reading your journal I’m reconsidering my plans to do my hike with a group. I may try and do a solo hike or bring a four legged friend along. As I read your journal I imagined what my own journey will be like, the sights, sounds, smells, the loneliness and physical pain associated with such an awesome undertaking. Thanks for posting your journal, it is a true inspiration!
Great Web Site. The Adirondacks will be waiting for your return. Hopefully your Dad and I will “run” up a few peaks with you ‘on the other side’ of the Planet. Hey, there is nothing wrong with a 401K — Barkeater.
Wondergimp, thanks for the letter, just got back from the current river, paddled 124 miles had an excellent time. Still thinking about the PCT in 2003. later S/A
Hey Wondergimp-as luck would have it, my name for my section hike turned out to be Gimp and well. Everyone thought it was a cute addition to my hiking partner’s name – Gump. I did a section hike this summer but will finish the AT as time allows in the future. Gump is about 400+ miles from the finish of his thru-hike this year though. Please email me as I would love to be in touch with someone who shares such a wonderfully descriptive trailname.
Just stop in to check out your web site!It looks good but I need to take time to read everything. It`s alot to read and look at. I can only say i`ve done scuba with the most interesting girl I know. Love ya and can`t wait to do it again roomy.Break a leg oops!
I think this is the 100th time I have looked at your website with an exclusive focus on the Cozumel pictures (although I did check out your foot surgery for the first time tonight). I have a pen pal friendship going on with Ursula and Santiago and have invited them to be guests at our home. I will be in touch should they decide to come visit and maybe we all can get together. Until then, I wish you the best and I think a return to Cozumel would be the best thing for your foot. I can’t wait to go back and I am pretty sure I owe you 10 pesos, payable in Cozumel.
I just took a look at your great website. Of course I found your story about your foot very interesting. Hope you can soon go back to your favorite activities hiking and running.
Jen,
You are such an inspiration and a breath of fresh air. I envy all of your life choices and only wish I had more guts to leave corporate America and all of these politically correct back stabbing losers behind and find me and what fulfills me. I love your site and I wish you all the best!
Jen: Nice site. We have alot in common, but you even though half my age have experienced more. Lucky you. I’m currently trying to complete my AT Thru-hike w/messed up foot. I’m taking scuba lessons this winter. I’ve been a outdoor instructor with various organizations for over 15 years. Kilimanjaro is on the top of my to do list. As well as Nepal (not interested in even trying to summit Mt Everest, just visit the area.) Never worry about not staying with the “mainstream” life & job. Your life is much more rewarding the way YOU are “living” it. You go girl.
Hey Jen, great homepage! Nice to follow your trails in this way! Really hope our paths will cross soon. Am planning to go to Guatemala this summer for a month – hiking, diving, … well travelling. Hope to hear from you! B.
Jennifer, I love the web site, it looks great. Congratulations to the 10 new FIN ADDICTS – NAUI Scuba Divers!!! Hope to see You all again on the next adventure. Jennifer, I’m glad you saw your octopi! Sorry Ryan, Jennifer made us do it.
