Khunde – Everest Base Camp Trek
“May those who seek the Path of Peace find It, and Happiness.”
-Geylong Tenzin Gyatsho (The Dalai Lama)
The Sherpa’s devout faith in Buddhism is prevalent everywhere on the trail to Everest. Emblazoned with a Buddhist mantra, mani stones are found throughout the Khumbu. Prayer wheels and stupas are also commonly seen along the trail, all created in an attempt to deter evil spirits from following those who enter.

Stupas usually have the all-seeing eyes of Buddha painted on them. The gilded thirteen steps on the spire represent the ten levels of compassion and the three levels of tantric awareness on the path to enlightenment.
From Thame we hiked north to Khunde, a very small village at elevation 12,600 feet. Just past Khunde we were able to see Ama Dablam, which at 22,402 feet, is one of the more well-known mountains of the Himalayas.
