Looking down at Carter Notch Hut
Journal Entry 7.22.00
“8pm in Gorham, NH. 15 miles from Carter Notch Hut today. I made it through the Whites in 6 days – a long and hard but beautiful haul. It feels SO GOOD to have the whites behind me. No more AMC crap! I am only 16.5 miles from Maine and lass than 300 from Katahdin. It was a long and tedious hike today, taking 5 hours to do the first 7 miles. The hike down from Imp Campsite was brutal – huge rocks straight down. My knees were killing me. Amazingly the rain held off all day and it only really rained for the last 3 miles.”

Looking across at the White Mountains
Journal Entry 7.24.00
“7pm at Gentian Pond campsite. I did 12 miles out of Gorham today. Yesterday I took a zero day as a treat to myself for getting through the Whites. I used one of the bikes at the hostel and rode to the supermarket and did all my errands. I made corn on the cob for dinner and watched tv with sobo’s Willow, Turtle, Apollo, and Man on the Moon. I saw my first moose today! He just stood there next to the trail and looked at me. He was very mellow. 4.7 miles to Maine – tomorrow – oh yes!”
