Appalachian Trail – The Toilets – Trail Privies

TRAIL PRIVIES

Well everyone seems to get to this subject eventually when talking to me about the trail, so here it is…

Nearly every shelter along the AT is equipped with a privy, or outhouse. The quality of privies varies greatly up and down the trail. Some privies are at least 15 years old, and it shows. Some of them are quite creative, such as the “double” privy in Maine, complete with a cribbage board in between the seats.

Privies are great for when it’s raining or when there are a lot of people on the trail and you don’t want to get caught with your pants down literally. The other option is to just walk off the trail and dig a nice cathole somewhere, away from any water sources of course!
